The City of Artesia was incorporated in May of 1959 and as of the 2000 census had a population of 16,380. Artesia is approximately 19 miles southeast of Los Angeles and about 10 miles northeast of Long Beach. Artesia started out as a small village that formally became a community in 1875 when the Artesia School District was established.
